Meet the Characters

Meet some of the main Characters as the Series Opens!

Lizzy Rogers: a spirited and unruly eleven-year-old orphan who likes horses, skipping rope, and running in the wind. But underneath the spunky exterior, Lizzy has a gentle heart and yearns for a place to belong.

Andrew Black: Lizzy’s best friend and fellow orphan, Andrew is hot-headed and insecure. He enjoys hunting and trapping and longs to fight for the Union.

James Brown: doing his best to hold his own within his rough and demanding family life, James is quiet and unhappy, but finds pleasure in music and solitude.

Matthew Brown: shy and unassuming, Matthew is inclined to archery and poems. He hides in the shadow of his older brother James as much as possible and avoids family altercations.

Hurley, Perry, and Brad Brown: James and Matthew’s brothers. Hurley, the eldest, is full of swaggering confidence, the pride and boast of his father and uncles. Perry, between Matthew and Brad, does his best to win the family praise, and Brad, the youngest, looks for approval by faithfully parroting whatever the other members of the family say.

Jackson Marsh: a young farmer from Kansas, Jackson likes nothing better than a good joke. He finds joy in his horses and a good crop of wheat.

Veronica Marsh: Jackson’s young wife who is gentle and sweet, but full of quiet strength. She finds comfort and purpose in her family and friends.

Edwin Hollows: the fourteen-year-old Pony Express Rider, full of rough energy and unpolished manners. Edwin looks after himself first, but is willing to help out when it doesn’t put him at risk.

Isabel Johnson: the dainty daughter of a hotel owner, Isabel is sweet and proper, with a sly streak hidden underneath and a heart full of love for her friends.

Captain Steven: commander of the military fort, Captain Steven is harsh and demanding but has good principles and will stand firm for discipline and honor.

Louise: the fort cook, a bustling, talkative woman originally from Kentucky, who won’t put up with nonsense but has a pretty good sense of humor for all that.

Sergeant Morris: a fort officer who performs his duties faithfully but is tolerant of childish pranks and tries to soften Captain Steven’s punishments.

Dicksey Red and Lupine: the fort ponies that Lizzy and Andrew are allowed to use. Dicksey Red is fiesty and cantankerous, but endearing for her quirks, and Lupine is steady and calm.
